About Dr. Ashis Ratan Sen

Dr. Ashis Ratan Sen is an accomplished national laboratory equipment and food safety specialist with nearly five decades of experience in chemical testing, regulatory standards, and laboratory quality management. He has spent over a decade serving as a premier national advisor and consultant for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, leading major initiatives to establish agricultural laboratories, assess pesticide residues, and improve national food safety frameworks. Prior to his extensive tenure with the UN, Dr. Sen had a long career at the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), where he ultimately served as the director in charge of the Chemical Testing Wing.

Dr. Sen’s core expertise lies in the establishment, refurbishment, and commissioning of modern food testing laboratories. He possesses deep technical mastery in implementing Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and guiding facilities toward achieving international ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation through method validation and robust quality manual development. Additionally, he is highly skilled in trade facilitation, navigating technical barriers to international trade, and strengthening national capacities to adopt and align with global CODEX Alimentarius standards

He holds a Ph.D. (2006) and an M.Phil. (1994) in chemistry from the University of Dhaka, built upon an M.Sc. and B.Sc. in chemistry from the University of Chattogram. Dr. Sen began his career in the late 1970s as an industrial quality control chemist and a college lecturer before transitioning to government and international regulatory bodies. To complement his academic background, he has completed advanced international training certifications, including IRCA-certified ISO 22000 Lead Auditor training, ILAC laboratory assessor training, and WTO workshops on sanitary and phytosanitary measures.
